Florence Photo and Video Diary

Tuesday 30 July 2013

The Italian countryside in all its glory danced outside the window soon taking over what was once the sunny Rivera's stunning landscape. We soon stopped on our way to Florence at of course the Leaning tower of Pisa, walking down the many streets to get there all I could do was look around waiting for the iconic landmarks top to peak out from above the trees and buildings. Walking through the archway of the wall that confides the precious building all you could simply do was gasp at what lays before you and marvel at the fact that it is still standing.

Giotto's bell tower stretches out into the sky within Piazza del Duomo, beside it sits Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore - A building thats architecture and sheer designs simply takes your breathe away. Standing beside it you can't help but be overwhelmed by the sheer amount of detail, marble sculptures are perched above intricate paintings and of course the door showing the old testament created in gold; The fact that Michelangelo was infatuated with this piece is completely understandable once you see its gigantic presence overlooking the Piazza del Duomo.

Celine, Miu Miu, Burberry, Dolce and Gabbana and Gucci to name just a few is what you see while you stroll through the streets of Florence. The brands name sits oh so exquisitely above those doors that lead to the never-ending wonders that the designers create. Window displays that make my heart skip beats because of the beauty they radiate. (I was so and I mean so close to buying that Celine bag in the window!)

Terracotta houses created a border along the rivers edge, Medici's past house with all of its grandeur was something that could not be missed and the feel of how they once lived was felt whilst walking to Palazzo Vecchio. 1299 was when the palace was built and having something that has survived for that period of time standing before you is a bewildering feeling, the sheer size of Piazza della Signoria is something to marvel at and if you aren't stunned already then there is the statues - The host of the finest and of course largest collections of outdoor statues it is something that is truly indescribable. Statutes such as Cosimo 1 dei Medici in the centre of the square, the famous copy of Michelangelo's David, Hercules and Cacus and the gorgeous Fountain of Neptune all with the stunning backdrop of Palazzo Vecchio. Of course the day would not have been complete without ice-cream!
