Somebody pinch me.

Thursday 21 March 2013

I am a self confessed Vogue addict - When that calendar changes over to the new month I can guarantee you that I am counting down the days until that crisp new issue of Vogue is in my hands. For as long as I have been reading Vogue (which is a very long time!) I have always left my imagination wonder as I flick past the page "Vogue Reader" where fellow readers *and obsessed Vogue lovers* write in expressing their views on last months issue from articles to the editorials featured throughout the glossy pages. I often think "what would it feel like to see your name printed in those bold, black letters across the page of Vogue?"

And well I experienced that very feeling in this months issue of Vogue Australia!

The March issue of Vogue Australia was the first issue marked as a "Collectors edition" all part of The Model Series that Vogue decided to create. The big fashion issue which featured Lara Stone on the front cover welcomed the return of curves to the fashion world - With this said the "Ahead of the curve" article featuring the sultry Lara instantly caught my eye. Diving deep into the changing faces of fashion over the decades, this expose displays how over the years our perception of beauty and what is considered "sexy, beautiful or even normal" has changed when the media and fashion industries  perception of these also transforms.

From the 1960's such minuscule models like Twiggy or Jean Shrimpton dominated the pages but as the end of the decade approached the healthier models soon took over. The 1970's saw models smiling and dancing down the runways and were completely linked to a free spirt lifestyle. 1980 ushered in what we now know as supermodels, they meant business and were soon dominating the runways, covers and even starting their own businesses. 1990 was when Claudia, Naomi and Cindy ruled the runways and a legend who was only 15 at the time emerged - Kate Moss. 2000 saw dow eyed and even doll faced models such as Perth born Gemma Ward and Lily Cole gracing the covers and 2010 saw a dramatic change with magazines casting models who were curvier (for fashion standards anyway) Lara Stone, Doutzen Kroes among many others were welcomed into the fashion world and embraced for their best assets being their curves.

This article truly struck a cord within me, for a young women for a incredibly long duration of her life that has struggled with body image issues and self worth reading that the fashion industry - Who I and many others look up to in high regard are changing their perceptions of what is a beautiful, sexy body is truly uplifting. Feeling this way when it came to an article in a magazine that I cherish, I had to take it upon myself to email them to express not only my love for the article, the magazine but to show them how much I as an avid fashion lover, Vogue lover and young woman appreciate an article such as this one. I typed it out and pressed send, without a glimmer of a thought that it would be published in the Vogue reader section. I also had to express my love when it came to a editorial in the name of "Due East" which I tweeted to them my admiration for it.

I rushed to the newsagent after work on the day that I knew Vogue was going to be out, I sat down waiting for my train to arrive and did my usual - Flicking through the pages in sheer awe and amazement. I came to the Vogue reader page and read the emails that like myself they sent after being astounded by a certain part of the magazine, I was left in shock as I saw my name laying before me in small, bold, black letters. I read over the email again and again double checking that it was my email because I was in disbelief - My email was published in VOGUE! After recollecting my thoughts I continued down the page to be again in shock when I saw my tweet about the "Due East" editorial. I literally had to prevent myself from dancing from sheer happiness at the train station and I could not wipe the smile off my face! I am still sitting here in astonishment that it happened and it honestly made me think "I would love to see my name in print in Vogue in every issue" whether as a stylist, part of the marketing team, as a fashion assistant or even a journalist *sighs at the thought of such a dream*
